Talorc

Talorc (or Talorcan) was a popular name among Pictish kings. There is an attested Gallo-Brittonic name Argiotalos, likely the same name. Argio-talos means ‘Brightbrow’ (tal ‘brow’) and if orc is the Pictish equivalent of √arg- ‘bright’, then Talorc too is ‘the bright-browed’.

Significance?

The name Talorc is essentially the same as that of the early Welsh bard Taliesin (tal + iesen ‘bright, shining’).

This suggests to me an underlying meaning that may provide an insight into Pictish culture. If Uuid, another king-name, means ‘seer’ (and this is the literal meaning), and Taliesin was a seer at least of a sort (early Welsh poets were always prophesying about something or other), then perhaps that is the underlying meaning of ‘bright brow’ : ‘seer’.

In Ireland (in pre-Christian times), there was the ri and the drui. In remote Pictland, did these roles become confused? Do the names Uuid and Talorc indicate the prophetic role of a Pictish leader?
